Mostly whenever someone thinks of Sonu Nigam they think of ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’, ‘Kabhi alvida na kehana’, ‘Abhi mujhme kahi’ and many other songs. But the Sonu Nigam I know and the voice I recall is of Disney’s character Aladdin. This is the 1st cartoon I watched as a child and still one of my favorites. In Hindi dubbing of Arabean Nights Sonu Nigam was the voice of ‘Aladdin’. He also sang the hindi version of ‘A whole new world’ you can find it on YouTube named ‘Sapano ka Jaha’.
I loved the character so much that his voice is still stuck there in my head. When he used to host a musical reality show ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’, I felt like Aladdin was hosting the show. He sung almost all kinds of songs and just other singing legends listing his top songs is not an easy thing.
Deewana, Jaan, Yaad, Chanda ki Doli
Now let’s talk about the albums, these songs feel so fresh even today. These songs showed the class of the singer. It was before the time when every other song in a Hindi film was sung by Sonu Nigam. You turn on the radio, you buy a cassette of a new movie, or you’re watching songs on TV. This voice was there everywhere.
Classically mild
When he was on MTV unplugged, he sang ‘Abhi Mujhme Kahi’ but in the beginning of the song, he sang a couple of lines from the album classically mild. The lines written by late Ajay Jhingaranji ‘chalki chalki chandani’ sung by Sonu Nigam can take you to a whole different world.
Movie songs
I’m trying to avoid the famous songs here as you must have heard them, but there are few songs of Sonu Nigam which were not that famous.
‘Ajanabi Shehar’ – Jaan-e-mann, written by gulzar sahab
‘Dard’ – Sarbjit, composed by Jeet Ganguly
‘Sun Zara’ – Lucky composed by Adanan Sami
