Hindi cinema has reached a really good level in the past few years, they are making movies on real issues. Yes entertainment is still the primary goal of movies till today but the stories they are sharing will make you think on different subjects we usually face in our lives.
There was a time in Hindi cinema when all the movies were either love stories or revenge stories. Every hero knew horse riding, fighting goons, going to Switzerland and opening his arms to hug the actress and removing bogie from the train.
Still there were some movies in the 90s which are not typical Hindi cinema, these movies may not be commercially successful but had really good writing and execution.
I’m listing some of the classic 90’s movies here which I felt are effective till today.
- Hu Tu Hu is the 1st movie that comes to my mind while listing classic movies from the 90s. This movie focuses on politicians and businessmen and how their children feel about their careers. Unlike all other movies where villains are richer and heroes come from poor families, this movie has got a different story. Gulzar sahab’s screenplay and writing feels still fresh when you watch this movie. One of the songs from the movie ‘Chhai chhapa chhai’ by Vishal Bhardwaj is still fresh in the voice of ‘Lata Mangeshkar’ and ’Hariharan’. You can see the impact of the movie that in ‘Biwi no 1’ Salman khan takes Shushmita sen to this movie. 😉
- Khamoshi the musical, speaking of Salman khan this movie is starring Salman khan but owned by Nana Patekar and Manisha Koirala. It is hard to pick but this could be the finest of Nana Patekar’s work. Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed this classical movie. It is an unique story. I don’t know how many movies are made from one line of this movie, ‘Lekin wo zindagi hi kya jisme koi namumkin sapna na ho’. This movie has some evergreen songs as well, ‘Bahon ke darmiya’, ‘Aaj mai upar’, ‘Jaana suno’, ‘Ye dil sun raha hai’.
- Dushman, this was the 1st time when an actress played a double role and the lead actor was playing a blind man’s role. It was a challenging movie to make especially in the 90s, Kaajol played really nice roles of two sisters, two completely different sisters. Sunjay Dutt played a blind man’s role who played piano and sang an old bollywood song ‘Jeevan ke safar me raahi’. And everyone was thrilled in Andhadun? And then there was Ahsutosh Rana, still one of my favorite villains. He was the soul of this movie, Addition to great writing and acting, Uttam singh’s songs can make you fall in love and cry.
- Mast, when I think of movies in the 90s, many films of Ram Gopal Verma come to my mind, starting with Rangeela, Shiva, Kaun, Raat, Daud, Satya. Most of these movies were starring Urmila matonkar, and Manoj Bajpayi. Here is an article on ‘Manoj Bajpaye’ if you’re also a fan.
Coming back to Mast, this movie is about a normal boy falling in love with a movie star and it’s journey. People were mad watching ‘Om Shanti Om’? This is a really well written movie, Urmila and Aftabh were very good in the film. Music, every song of this movie was hit back then and some you will fall in love even today. You can see Neeraj Vorah (writer of Hera Pheri) in this movie in a special role. - Andaz Apna Apna, I don’t need to write too much for this movie, most of you will agree that this is one of the best comic movies ever made. Writing is great but the execution is extraordinary when it comes to Aamir Khan, Paresh Rawal, Shakti Kapoor and almost everyone in the movie. Music is really great. Speaking of music, SPB’s, ‘ye raat aur ye doori’ and Salman’s expressions are just awesome. If you want to watch a comedy movie, go and watch this one.
These are a few of my favorite Hindi movies from the 90s. If you want to mention a favorite, feel free to comment.
Really great movies… Mast & Andaz apna apna are the best..
